Industrial Ozone Applications for Water Treatment

Ozone is used in a wide variety of industrial applications. Most applications are associated with air treatment or water treatment. There are numerous advantages and varieties for industrial ozone applications for water treatment systems.

Ozone Treatment of Industrial Wastewater

Ozone and advanced oxidation processes can selectively remove pollutants from industrial wastewater and process water, e.g. TOC, COD, BOD, cyanide, phenol, color among many other compounds. This can include discharge to surface waters or to POTW (referred to as pretreatment). Ozone can also be used to keeps wastewater sumps clean and odor free.

Groundwater Remediation

Ozone and ozone-based advanced oxidation processes (AOP) can be used for groundwater remediation. It can be applied via in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) methods or by pump and treat methods. Ozone-based technologies have been used successfully to treat various DCE, TCE, 1,4 Dioxane, BTEX and other common groundwater contaminants.

Industrial Water Processing

Industrial water processing is used in a number of industries including:

  • Electronic industry process water
  • Water used in the formulations of personal care and cleaning products
  • Pharmaceutical and biotechnology water (e.g., water for injection (WFI))

The water must be purified prior to use which can involve a wide range of treatment technologies such as reverse osmosis, ion exchange and other methods. Once the water has been purified, it is normally important to maintain biological stability. Ozone is often used to keep both the water as well as the piping and tanks free of biological growth and biofilms during storage. Ozone and UV are also used in advanced oxidation processes to remove TOC from process water.

Ozone Application in Food & Beverage Industries

Ozone has a long history of use as a disinfectant in food and beverage processing. It is an effective and powerful way to disinfect and eliminate microorganisms, bacteria, and viruses. Ozone is the dominant method for the treatment of bottled water and is used in the processing of fruits and vegetables to remove E. coli, Listeria and more.

Ozone Cooling Water Tower Treatment

Ozone has been used extensively for treatment in cooling water towers to remove biological build-ups. It is a powerful and environmentally-friendly oxidizing biocide and has many advantages compared to traditional chemical water treatment.

Rainwater Harvesting

Aquaculture

ozone aquaculture

Ozone is used to treat feed water as well as improve water quality in aquaculture systems including recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS).

It is an effective method for disinfection and removing discoloration, colloidal solids, nitrite, and dissolved organic compounds.

Gas Phase Surface Disinfection

Ozone can also be used to disinfect surfaces in the gas phase. This approach might offer a better option than using aqueous phase ozone for surface treatment. Due to the high gas phase concentrations, the treatment must be done in a closed space.

Odor Control

Ozone can be used for industrial applications to remove odor and improve air quality. Ozone can be used for sewage odor control and wastewater odor control by oxidizing contaminants from air at municipal and industrial plants.

Municipal Drinking Water

municipal drinking water

Ozone has been shown to be effective in a variety of drinking water applications including: disinfection, color removal, iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) reduction, hydrogen sulfide removal, taste and odor reduction micro pollutant removal and improved filtration and flocculation of potable water. Ozone can also reduce formation of disinfection by-products such as trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids. Ozonation is effective for removal of difficult-to-treat pathogens such as giardia and cryptosporidium.

Municipal Wastewater

Ozone has been used in two applications for municipal wastewater treatment: disinfection of wastewater effluent prior to discharge and treatment of sludge from the activated sludge process. In the latter case the sludge treatment can reduce the amount of excess sludge and minimize the phenomenon known as bulking. More recently, ozone is being considered for water reuse applications to recycle municipal wastewater for a variety of applications including indirect potable use.

Additional Ozone Uses

There are many additional uses of ozone that are often not known about by the general public. These include:

  • Swimming pool disinfection
  • Industrial laundries
  • Grain storage
  • Processing of textiles (especially denim)
  • Treatment of plastic films to allow for better adhesion of ink
  • Processing of silicon wafers for semiconductor manufacture
  • Accelerated life testing of rubber
  • NOX reduction for air pollution control
  • Aquarium and mammal life support systems
  • Medical waste processing
