Ozone drinking water treatment is an important part of water quality protection in the US. The chart above shows the growth in the use of ozone for treating drinking water in the US. Overall 270 million Americans are served by public water systems. On average, Americans use about 150 gallons per day per person of water. This means that the public water works are producing in total about 40 billion gallons of water per day.
The chart shows that about 30% of this total, or 12 billion gallons per day, is treated with ozone. Over 240 plants employ ozone drinking water treatment. Ozone generator capacity for all of those plants is around 450,000 lbs of ozone, nearly 1,900 lbs/installation.
What is all of this ozone being used for? There are numerous applications for ozone water treatment for potable water. These include taste and odor control, color removal, filtration enhancement, disinfection and removal of toxic chemicals in the water such as those formed from the reaction of chlorine with organic compounds. Most drinking water plants take advantage of more than one of ozone’s capabilities, essentially getting a 2 for 1 or 3 for 1 benefit for every dollar spent on the ozone generators.
