Spartan Environmental Technologies News 2013

This page provides recent events and news regarding Spartan. We encourage you to visit this page often to learn about the latest information about our company, products and activities. For older information click on the year of interest (2004 , 2005 , 2006 , 2007 , 2008 , 2009 , 2010 , 2011 ) Spartan’s product line includes a full range of ozone generators, odor control systems and a proprietary electrolytic system for the removal of organics from water. These systems treat air and water from municipal, commercial and industrial facilities.

Spartan Commissions Its First Oxygenation System for Bio Filtration 11/06/2013

Spartan Environmental Technologies commissions its first oxygenation system for a bio filtration process to remove organic contaminants from groundwater. A school district in New York needed to treat contaminated groundwater. A bio filtration process was selected to remove the organic contaminant, acetone, from the water, but because the groundwater was deficient in dissolved oxygen, a separate oxygenation system was required to support the bio filtration process.

Spartan modified its SPARTOX A30 ozone water treatment system by removing the ozone generator, but keeping the oxygen concentrator, venture injection system and controls. Upon start-up, the dissolved oxygen levels increased from less than 1 ppm to 12 ppm, above expectations of the engineering firm that designed the process.

Anthony Sacco, Marketing Director for Spartan, commented, “Spartan believes that with the increasing usage of bio filtration processes in water treatment that ozone and oxygenation systems will be used to improve performance of these system for removal of organic contaminants.”

Spartan Delivers Ozone Water Treatment System to NASA 07/25/2013

Spartan Environmental Technologies has delivered two of its SPARTOX(TM) ozone water treatment systems to NASA’s Plum Brook Station (PBS) near Sandusky, OH. The SPARTOX units are used to manage the water circulating in two 900- ton cooling towers at the facility.

PBS encompasses several major NASA test facilities. The Spacecraft Propulsion Facility is the world’s only facility capable of testing full-scale upper-stage launch vehicles and rocket engines under simulated high-altitude conditions. The Space Power Facility houses the world’s largest space environment vacuum chamber. PBS also has cryogenic test facilities and a hypersonic wind tunnel.

NASA is one of the leaders in using ozone for environmentally sustainable cooling water management. Ozone offers many advantages for cooling water management including reduced water use, improved energy efficiency, and elimination of harmful treatment chemicals typically used in cooling water. In addition, ozone is extremely effective in controlling pathogens that might breed inside a cooling water tower including Legionella, the bacteria that causes legionnaire’s disease.

SPARTOX Ozone Water Treatment Systems: SPARTOX systems are self contained fully integrated ozone water treatment systems that are easy to install and operate. Computer control makes the system able to operate automatically. The units can be integrated into a facilities overall computer network for remote monitoring and control.

Spartan Environmental Technologies Commissions SPARTOX Ozone Water Treatment System at a Major Aircraft Manufacturer 6/27/2013

Spartan Environmental Technologies commissions the Largest SPARTOX System to date at a Major Aircraft Manufacturer. The SPARTOX system is used as a final polish system for removing chemical oxygen demand (COD) from wastewater generated in the manufacturing process.

The system, a SPARTOX A240, is a fully integrated ozone water treatment system producing up to 240 g/h of ozone (~13 lbs/day of ozone), which could treat up to one million gallons per day of drinking water. The system includes oxygen generation from compressed air, ozone generation, ozone water mixing and computerized controls and instruments for automatic operation and integration in the plant computer control system.

Ozone water treatment is effective in removing COD from wastewater without concentrating the waste or creating undesirable byproducts. The SPARTOX system is part of a larger wastewater treatment facility that includes various chemical treatments and filtration prior to discharge to the municipal wastewater treatment plant.

Tony Sacco, Marketing Director for Spartan Environmental Technologies, stated that: “Spartan is pleased that a highly regarded manufacturer has selected the SPARTOX system for their wastewater treatment needs. The SPARTOX A240 extends the range of the SPARTOX product line from 20-240 g/h which covers a wide range of water treatment applications, from industrial waste, to drinking water, to rain water treatment.”

Spartan Environmental Technologies Supplies Ozone based Advanced Oxidation System to the University of Miami net Zero Water Project 6/7/2013

The University of Miami (UM) retrofit Eaton Hall, a 4-bed 4-bath dormitory, making it a low energy, autonomous net-zero water building. Net-zero water (NZW) buildings treat and re-use all wastewater with water treatment systems in the building. Therefore, all the waste from a building’s sinks, laundry, toilets, dishwasher and showers will go into that system and treat the water to potable water quality standards. The students will use the water for everything but drinking and cooking.

The SPARTOX system (https://www.spartanwatertreatment.com/SpartOX-ozone-water-treatment-system.html) is part of the overall treatment for the wastewater to create a net-zero water dorm. The SPARTOX advanced oxidation process uses ozone, peroxide and UV light to remove dissolved organic matter and kill microorganisms in the water. The SPARTOX system integrates the entire process on a single computer controlled skid. This allows for easy installation and operation.

In addition to the main dorm project, UM is also studying social motivations for adoption of NZW technology. In short, how to encourage people to look past the psychological “yuck” factor and realize the many benefits. The principal investigator, Dr. James Englehardt, believes this can be a model for future buildings by reducing energy and water demand while promoting sustainable development.

NZW buildings can alleviate the need to treat the 11 billion pounds of toxic chemicals that are released into the environment each year in the US and save energy used for conveyance and desalination. You can learn more about the UM NZW project at http://www7.miami.edu/ftp/netzerowaterdorm/.html

Spartan Environmental Technologies Supplies Ozone Water Treatment System to Kentucky State University’s No-Waste Aquaculture Project 4/13/2013

Spartan Environmental Technologies, a company based in Beachwood, Ohio, announced its contract to supply Kentucky State University’s (KSU) Aquaculture program with an ozone water treatment system to transform an old waste water treatment facility in Winchester, Kentucky.

KSU developed a solution to repurpose an old wastewater treatment facility into a fishery, and will be using Spartan’s SPARTOX(TM) ozone water technology. The SPARTOX(TM) system is part of the overall treatment for the wastewater produced in the process to create an appropriate environment to raise fish.

The fishery will generate no waste as the water will cycle right back to the new treatment plant and the biosolids can be used as fertilizer. If the new aquaculture process is successful, they hope to replicate their solution with other former plants in the area.

This innovative project is not only bio sustainable but also will create jobs in the region, save demolition costs and generate revenue. You can learn more about the KSU project at www.paddlefishfarming.com .
